Alan Rolston is an American who is interested in mountain climbing. As a climber, Allen is used to adventure. It's one of the exciting things about doing dangerous sports. Many times, Allen almost lost his life because of an accident. In April 26, 2003, he found himself in a very dangerous situation when he was mountaineering in Utah.
On that day, when Allen was climbing alone, his arm was pressed under a 2000 kilogram rock that fell on him. Because his arm was not free, he stayed there for five days, hoping someone would find him. But when he finished his water, he knew that he would have to take measures to save his life. He did not want to die that day. So he excised half of his right arm with a knife. Then, he used his left arm to put himself on a bandage so that he wouldn't lose too much blood. After that, he climbed down the hill to seek help.
After he lost his arm, he wrote a book called "the choice of life and death" (translated as "the life and death dilemma"). It means "in a dilemma that you can't seem to be able to get rid of." In this book, Allen tells about the importance of making wise choices and mastering his life. He was so fond of mountaineering that he continued to climb the mountain even after this experience.
